In the Event of a Hurricane
October 2006 - West Babylon, NY -The National Oceanic
And Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Federal Emergency Management
Agency is warning that a very active hurricane season is here. “Long
Islanders need to be prepared,” explains Gil Picard, President of
The Long Island Board of REALTORS® Inc. (LIBOR). “Knowing what
to do in the event of a hurricane is crucial,” he continued. The
following list of recommendations was compiled by LIBOR to help the public
plan in the event of a hurricane disaster.
Family Evacuation Plan
- Prepare a plan that identifies where to go if you have to evacuate.
Contact the local emergency management office or American Red Cross
for information about safest evacuation routes and shelters. Identify
locations outside of the area that you can go such as a friend's home
or motel. Make a list of telephone numbers for these locations.
- Plan your evacuation route and store it along with local maps. You
may need to take alternative or unfamiliar routes if roads are closed.
If advised to evacuate, do so immediately.
- Have a plan for your pets. Not all shelters will take them.
Hurricane Disaster Supply Kit
Assemble a kit that includes:
- First aid kit and essential medications.
- Canned food and can opener.
- At least three gallons of water per person.
- Protective clothing, rainwear, bedding or sleeping bags.
- Battery-powered radio, TV, flashlight, and extra batteries.
- Items for infants, elderly or disabled family members.
- Written instructions on how to turn off electricity, gas and water
if authorities advise you to. (You'll need a professional to turn them
back on.)
- A non-electronic phone – the phone lines often remain operational
even during power outages
Communications
If a hurricane strikes, listen to radio or TV stations for storm information.
Plan to communicate with someone who lives out of the area who can serve
as your messenger. Home
- Secure or bring inside any lawn furniture, outdoor decorations, trash
cans and anything that can be picked up by the wind.
- Cover all windows using precut plywood. Tape does not prevent windows
from breaking.
- Inventory personal property.
- Safely secure records and valuable documents in a watertight place.
- Fill your car's gas tank.
- Prepare to evacuate when recommended.
