LIBOR Members Help Build Pathway to Homeownership for Long Island Family

Jun 4, 2026

In recognition of National Homeownership Month and National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) 2026 REALTORS® Are Good Neighbors Volunteer Days, members of Long Island Board of REALTORS® (LIBOR) teamed up with Habitat for Humanity of Long Island (HFHLI) to help build an affordable home in Wyandanch for a deserving Long Island family. The effort reflects LIBOR's commitment to supporting housing opportunities and helping make the dream of homeownership a reality for more families across the region.

On June 3, 2026, LIBOR members rolled up their sleeves and joined Habitat for Humanity of Long Island site supervisors at the construction site, assisting with the siding of the home's newly installed walls. By contributing their time and skills, members helped advance a project that will provide a family with the stability, security, and opportunity that homeownership can offer

In addition to providing volunteer labor, LIBOR contributed $3,500 toward the construction of the home. Since 2004, LIBOR has sponsored the building of 20 Habitat for Humanity homes across Long Island, demonstrating the association's longstanding commitment to advancing housing opportunities and community investment.

"Across the country, 68% of all REALTORS® volunteer monthly in their communities. Giving back is part of who we are, both as people and as professionals," said LIBOR President Shaan Khan. "Together with NAR, we encourage REALTORS® to put their commitment to service into action. Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Long Island gives our members a meaningful opportunity to support the dream of homeownership and help families build brighter futures."

National Homeownership Month, observed each June, celebrates the value of homeownership and raises awareness about the importance of making homeownership more attainable for all Americans. Throughout the month, housing advocates, industry professionals, and community organizations highlight the many social and economic benefits of owning a home, including increased financial stability, wealth-building opportunities, and stronger communities.

The volunteer effort also coincided with NAR's 2026 REALTORS® Are Good Neighbors Volunteer Days, held from May 30 through June 7. The nationwide initiative encourages REALTOR® associations, brokerages, and individual members to engage in community service projects that make a positive impact where they live and work.

HFHLI works to promote long-term financial security for families through affordable homeownership opportunities. By providing access to safe, affordable housing, Habitat helps families better meet their essential needs, including food, healthcare, childcare, and education. Affordable homeownership creates a foundation that allows residents, neighborhoods, and entire communities to thrive.

Homeownership remains one of the most powerful pathways to financial security, stability, and opportunity. By partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Long Island during National Homeownership Month, LIBOR members are helping ensure that more Long Islanders have the chance to achieve the American Dream. Their efforts reflect the REALTOR® commitment to building communities where homeownership is not just an aspiration, but an attainable reality.
