Assembly Speaker: A Special Legislative Session Not Expected Before January 2024

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) said last week that he does not expect that a special session will be called before January to take up issues such as casinos or cannabis. In June, the Assembly did not approve a State Senate-backed agreement between New York State and the indigenous Seneca Nation for a new casino deal, and a recent lawsuit has stopped the opening of new cannabis retailers after the New York State Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) was court-ordered to temporarily halt issuing new licenses. This means that the soonest these subjects and all other lawmaking activities could be taken up is January 2024. Learn more.
