Governor Signs Significant Change to How Suburbs Hold Local Elections

Dec 27, 2023

"Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) on Friday signed a new law that could radically transform local elections in New York, switching them to even-numbered years to coincide with gubernatorial and presidential elections," reported Newsday. Democrats, good government groups, and the New York Times praised this move to increase voter turnout, but Republicans and the county government association are not happy. This change will not yet affect the City of New York and other incorporated cities such as Long Beach and Glen Cove, or some public offices like district attorney, county clerk, judge, or sheriff, but Governor Hochul "said she also supports changing those elections through a state constitutional amendment," reported WNBC-4.
