Suffolk County: Infrastructure Deal Announced, Voter Referendum in November

Supported by labor unions and environmental advocates, Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine (R) and Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey (R-Lindenhurst) announced what they called  "landmark legislation to protect Suffolk’s drinking water." Republican leaders notably also thanked State Senator Monica Martinez (D-Brentwood) and Assemblymember Fred Thiele (D-East End) for their legislation in Albany that "will secure funding means to provide money for both sewage infrastructure and I/A systems for private homes. The money will be generated by a .0.125% sales tax increase, which is subject to a referendum vote in November 2024." Newsday's editorial board  praised the long-awaited deal, especially as news came that Brentwood's Sisters of St. Joseph  plans 140 new affordable apartment units on their property.
