"Suffolk County homeowners will soon be able to upgrade to enhanced septic systems that reduce dangerous nitrogen pollution at a higher discounted rate, thanks to a surge of state funding," reported Spectrum News.
Governor Kathy Hochul (D) signed a bill last week" that increases the reimbursement rate for installation of an enhanced septic system to 75%, or up to $25,000. The governor also announced Suffolk County will receive $20 million in new grant funding it can use toward its Septic Improvement Program that provides homeowners $10,000 grants for the upgrade."
"The increased state funding coupled with county funding will allow homeowners to upgrade septic systems 'for virtually next to nothing,' Suffolk County Executive Edward P. Romaine (R) said."
The bill's sponsor, Assemblymember Rebecca Kassay (D-Port Jefferson, Stony Brook), said the following: “While advanced septic technologies are significantly more effective at treating wastewater, their cost often puts them out of reach for many families—unless supported by state funding. I am proud to work with the Governor and our colleagues to deliver this solution that not only further protects our water, but also addresses Long Island’s affordability issues.”
